Bayfront Health St. Petersburg’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Program underscores our commitment to providing the highest level of care to individuals living with epilepsy or seizure disorders. We offer cutting-edge evaluation, diagnostics, medical intervention, clinical trials, surgical treatment and ongoing support. Bayfront’s premier program is the only one of its kind in Pinellas County and one of only five Level IV regional referral centers in Florida.
Patients benefit from a multi-disciplinary team of specialists including a nationally known neurologist specializing in epilepsy, an epilepsy neurosurgeon, neuropsychologist, EEG technologists, speech pathologists, neurosciences nurses and social workers. These experts work with the treatment team of pharmacists, neuroragiologists, pathologists and nuclear medicine specialists to provide seamless care and personalized treatment ranging from medical intervention and drug therapy to surgical intervention.
If you are experiencing a new onset of seizures, we can evaluate you to provide answers. If you have uncontrolled epilepsy that is not responsive to medical treatment, we can offer new options. If you have well-controlled epilepsy, we can work with you to help you continue to successfully manage your condition.
Anti-seizure medications are the most common treatment approach and can help control the frequency and severity of epileptic seizures. When medical management is insufficient, doctors may suggest a surgical approach such as:
- Regulating the electrical activity of the brain through a small pacemaker device called a vagus nerve stimulator (VNS). The battery-operated device, which is placed under the skin by the vagus nerve, sends electrical impulses to block seizure-producing electrical activity in the brain.
- Removing the area of the brain that is the source of the seizures.
Although each person’s epilepsy care plan is customized to meet their unique needs, the goal is the same for all our patients: to improve their well-being and quality of life.
